Are there any special settings for UK keyboard?

My problem is that I can enter 'Login' but the keyboard wont enter any characters in 'Password'.
I've tried two keyboards, one a Dell rated 5V 100mA and two OS 'wheez' and 'archlinux'.
I'm using a USB hub with it's own power supply but no joy.

Nothing wrong with your keyboard. Password characters are not echoed in Linux for security reasons, so nobody looking over your shoulder can see what your password is or how many characters, unless they see exactly which keys you press.

That should not be an issue unless your keyboard drops or replicates keys (like my wireless keyboard), in which case you just have to try again.
